Grow It Day: Soil look-and-sort

Rocket dumps a scoop of soil on a tray.

Raven hands out gloves and a magnifier.

Nova asks, "How many kinds of bits can you find?"

  1. Soil has rock bits, water, air and old plant bits.
  2. Soil holds roots and gives plants water and food.
  3. Sand lets water through fast. Clay holds water.
  4. Worms breathe through damp skin and live in damp soil.
  5. Worm tunnels and casts make soil better for plants.

Safety first

A grown-up gets the soil and handles any tools.

Wash your hands well when you finish.
For a grown-up
Ask: which pile is the biggest?
Ask: what bits came from plants?
Praise slow, careful looking.
