Grow It Day: Light or dark?

Rocket proudly shows his family the two cups.

"Guess which one lived in the cupboard!" he says.

Raven asks, "What do you notice?"

Nova says, "Share your evidence."

  1. Plants need light and water.
  2. Leaves use light to make food.
  3. A fair test changes only one thing.
  4. Sprouts in the dark stay pale.
◇ LIGHT OR DARK SHOW AND TELL
Hide both cups behind your back.
Show them to a grown-up, one at a time.
Ask: which one grew in the dark?
Show the clues: color, stem and leaves.
Tell how you kept the test fair.
Put cup B by the window with cup A.
Predict together: what will cup B do now?
Safety first
Hold the cups gently with two hands.
A grown-up adds any water.
Nothing from the cups goes in your mouth.
Wash hands when you finish.
For a grown-up
Ask: what was the one thing we changed?
Ask: which clues show the cup was in the dark?
Praise good predictions, even ones that did not match.
