A grown-up fills a clear cup with a little water.
The grown-up adds a few drops of food coloring.

Stand one end in the colored water.
Wait and watch for a few minutes.
What do you notice about the color?
Talk about how a real stem carries water up.
◇ LEAF RUBBINGS
A grown-up picks up fallen leaves from a known tree.
Put a leaf under a sheet of paper.
Rub the side of a crayon over the paper.
Watch the veins appear!
Try two or three different leaf shapes.
Safety first
A grown-up pours the water and the coloring.
Coloring can stain, so cover the table.
Nothing from this activity goes in your mouth.
Use only fallen leaves a grown-up picks up.
