Grow It Day: Root diary

Rocket lines up his drawings from the week.

"My bean roots grew so much!" he says.

Raven asks, "What do you notice from day to day?"

Nova says, "Compare them."

  1. Roots grow down.
  2. Roots anchor the plant.
  3. Root hairs take up water.
  4. A carrot is a taproot we eat.
  5. Grass has fibrous roots.
◇ MAKE A ROOT DIARY TOGETHER
Fold some paper to make a little book.
Glue or tape your week of bean drawings inside.
Look at the bean cup together.
Draw the roots on a new page today.
Lay your paper strip next to the cup.
Count the marks on your strip.
Talk about which day the root grew most.
Keep adding a drawing each day next week.
Safety first
A grown-up handles the glue and any scissors.
Keep the bean cup closed and on the table.
Wash hands after touching the cup.
For a grown-up
Ask: how are the roots different from Monday?
Ask: which way are the roots pointing?
Praise careful looking and every drawing.
