Grow It Day: Bean in a cup

Rocket holds up a clear cup.

"Let us watch roots grow!" he says.

Raven asks, "What do you notice through the cup?"

Nova says, "Clear walls show the roots."

  1. Seeds need water, warmth and air to sprout.
  2. The root comes out first.
  3. Roots grow down. Shoots grow up.
  4. Root hairs take in water.
  5. A sprout uses food stored in its seed.
◇ START A BEAN CUP
Wash your hands first.
Fold a paper towel.
Line the inside of a clear cup with it.
A grown-up wets the towel so it is damp.
Push a dry bean between the towel and cup.
Put it about halfway down so you can see it.
A grown-up adds a little water to the bottom.
Set the cup in a warm spot.
Check it every day. Keep the towel damp.
Safety first
Never eat the bean or the sprout.
Keep beans away from babies and pets.
A grown-up pours the water.
Wash your hands when you are done.
For a grown-up
Next week the bean cup is used to watch roots.
Ask: what do you think will come out first?
Praise good guesses, even ones that turn out wrong.
