Raven asks, "What do you notice inside each fruit?"
Nova says, "Count, sort and compare."
A seed holds a tiny new plant.
The seed coat keeps the seed safe.
Seed food feeds the tiny plant.
Seeds come in many sizes, shapes and colors.
Flowers make seeds, and fruit holds them.
◇ HUNT FOR SEEDS IN FRUIT
Wash your hands first. A grown-up cuts an apple across its middle. Look at the seeds. Do they make a star shape? A grown-up cuts a pear, a cucumber or a melon. Find the seeds in each fruit. A grown-up scoops a few seeds onto a plate. Sort the seeds from smallest to biggest. Count the seeds from each fruit.
Safety first
Only a grown-up uses the knife. Do not taste the fruit or the seeds today. Never eat seeds from an activity. Wash your hands when you are done.
For a grown-up
Cut an apple across its middle. The seeds show a five point star. Ask: which fruit had the most seeds? Ask: which seeds were the biggest?
