Grow It Day: Garden Show

Rocket sets up a little stage on the living room rug. Raven pins up their garden maps.

"Welcome to the Garden Show!" Rocket announces.

Raven turns to the family. "What do you notice about our design?"

Nova hovers beside the bean plant. "Tell them about your mistakes too," she says. "That is where the learning grew."

  1. Engineers define a problem with criteria and constraints.
  2. Gardens need sun, drainage, water and space for each plant.
  3. Tall plants go on the north side so they do not shade short ones.
  4. Pots need drainage holes, and a fair test changes only one thing.
  5. Comparing designs against criteria helps you choose and improve.
◇ PRESENT YOUR GARDEN DESIGN
Show your garden map to your family.
Explain your criteria and constraints.
Point out where the sun falls and where the tall plants go.
Share your fair test results and one failure point you fixed.
Ask your family for one idea to make the design better.
Pick one idea and test it together, like checking a new spot for sun.
Show your bean plant and your growth notes.
Safety first
If you test a spot outside, stay with a grown-up.
Wear gloves for any soil, and wash your hands after.
Never look straight at the Sun.
For a grown-up
Ask open questions, like "Why did you put that plant there?"
Celebrate the mistakes your child fixed. That is real engineering.
COURSE CELEBRATION CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which living things are the producers in a garden?
When do tender crops like beans go outside?
What does a fair test change?

You did it! You grew a plant, ran fair tests and designed a garden.

Rocket, Raven and Nova are proud of every measurement and every mistake.

Keep growing, keep noticing and keep asking questions. Happy gardening!
