Friday: From Soil to Sky

Rocket draws a giant map of a plant. "Water starts here and ends... somewhere?" he says.

Raven traces the stem with her pencil. "What do you notice about the path? Does it ever stop?"

Nova hovers over the map. "Follow one drop," she says. "Where does it go after the leaf?"

Rocket draws a cloud. "Into the air!"

One drop's journey

  1. Rain or a watering can wets the soil.
  2. Root hairs take in the water.
  3. Xylem tubes carry it up the stem.
  4. The water reaches the leaves.
  5. Water vapor leaves through the stomata.
  6. The water vapor joins the air.

Parts and jobs

Each part of the plant has a job in moving water.

Together, the parts work as one system.

The part that takes in water from soil: ____.
The tubes that carry water up: ____.
The tiny doors water vapor leaves through: ____.
WHICH PART?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which part holds up the leaves and carries water?
Which part gives the root a huge surface for water?
Week checkTrue or false?
Roots anchor a plant and take in water.?
Phloem carries water up from the roots.?
Leaves let out water vapor through stomata.?
A potato is an underground stem.?
Plants keep almost all the water they take in.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEWater moves from roots, up the xylem, and out the stomata.
Draw your bean plant. Add arrows to show the path of water from soil to air.
Try it
Measure your bean stem one more time. Count the leaves.
Add the numbers to your growth log.
Compare Tuesday and Friday. Did the stem grow?
Safety first
Touch the plant gently.
Wash your hands after touching soil.
For a grown-up
For Saturday you need a clear plastic bag and a twist tie or string.
Choose a leafy houseplant, or a low tree branch you can reach easily.
Plan to do the test on a sunny day if you can.

Amazing mapping! Tomorrow is Grow It Day. You will catch water leaving real leaves.
