Grow It Day: Kitchen Plant Hunt

Rocket waves a clipboard. "Plant parts are hiding in the kitchen. Let's find them all!"

Raven opens the vegetable drawer. "What do you notice? This carrot looks like a root."

Nova hovers by the counter. "Look for seeds, eyes and roots," she hints. "They are clues."

The family grabs a basket and starts the hunt.

  1. Roots anchor a plant and take in water and nutrients.
  2. Stems hold the plant up and carry water and food. A potato is a stem.
  3. Leaves make food from light, water and air. This is photosynthesis.
  4. Flowers make seeds. Fruits protect seeds. Seeds hold a tiny new plant.
◇ KITCHEN PLANT-PART HUNT
With a grown-up, look for foods that are plant parts.
Find a carrot. Decide which part it is.
Find a potato. Look for its eyes.
Find peas or beans. Decide which part they are.
Find an apple or a cucumber. Look for where seeds would be.
Sort each food into a pile: root, stem, seed or fruit.
Put every food back when you finish.
Safety first
Do not eat or taste anything during the hunt.
A grown-up does any cutting with a knife.
Wash your hands before and after the hunt.
For a grown-up
If you cut an apple or cucumber, do it yourself and let your child look.
Ask: how do you know which part it is? What is your clue?
SORT THE KITCHEN FINDS
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which part is a carrot?
