Monday: Meet the Plant Team

Rocket rolls in a wagon full of cups, beans and paper towels. "I built a bean window!" he says.

Raven peeks at a dry bean. "What do you notice? It looks asleep."

Nova hovers over the cup. "A plant is a team of parts," she says. "Watch which part shows up first."

Rocket grins. "Then we start a bean today and watch it all week!"

Six parts, six jobs

Most plants have the same basic parts.

They are roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds.

Each part has a job. Together they help the plant stay alive and grow.

Roots, stems and leaves help the plant grow and survive.

Flowers, fruits and seeds help the plant make new plants.

Start your bean window

This week you will grow a bean where you can see it.

A clear cup works like a window into the soil world.

  1. A grown-up soaks three dry beans in water overnight.
  2. Fold a paper towel and line the inside of a clear cup.
  3. Stuff a crumpled paper towel in the middle to hold it in place.
  4. Slide the soaked beans between the cup wall and the towel.
  5. Pour a little water in the bottom so the towel stays damp.
  6. Set the cup in a warm spot out of direct hot sun.
Safety first
Never eat the beans, even the dry ones. Nothing goes in your mouth.
Wipe up spills right away so no one slips.
Wash your hands after you set up the cup.
How many basic plant parts did we name today? Type the number.
WHY THIS EXERCISEWe named six parts, and each one has a job.
Draw your bean window cup on day one. Label the beans and the towel.

Great start, plant team! Tomorrow we dig into roots, the hidden helpers.
