Machine Day: Your Machine Show

The lab table holds a zipper, a pen and a cardboard elevator.

Rocket bounces. "Everyone pick a machine to explain!"

Raven smiles. "What do you notice about every machine here?"

Nova glows over the table. "Every one has parts with a job."

  1. An elevator car hangs from strong ropes over a sheave.
  2. A counterweight on the other end makes lifting easier.
  3. A motor turns the sheave, and the car moves.
  4. Safety brakes grip the guide rails to stop a fast car.
  5. Every machine in this course has parts with jobs.
◇ FAMILY MACHINE SHOW
Set your machine or model where everyone can see it.
Say what the machine does.
Point to each part and say its job.
Tell how the parts work together.
Show one thing you tested and what happened.
Listeners say one thing they learned.
For a grown-up
Let your child lead. Ask questions instead of fixing things.
Ask: what part surprised you most in this course?
Praise clear words and brave trying, not perfect answers.
Safety first
Show machines on a low table or the floor.
Take-apart parts and coins stay away from younger siblings and mouths.
Appliances, switches and outlets are for pointing at only.
