Wednesday: Look Closely at a Faucet

Raven lies on her back under the sink with a flashlight.

"Two little pipes and two little valves," she says.

Rocket wants to turn one. "Wait for a grown-up," Raven says.

Nova lights up the pipes. "Follow the water from the valve to the spout."

You need

  • A sink with a turning faucet
  • A flashlight
  • Paper and a pencil
  • A grown-up
Safety first
A grown-up turns any valve under the sink. You watch.
Look at the faucet. Do not take it apart.
Use the cold handle only.
Wipe up any splash so nobody slips.

The look-closely tour

  1. Look at the handle. Does it turn or lift?
  2. Look under the sink with the flashlight. Find the valves.
  3. Your grown-up turns the cold valve off.
  4. Now turn the cold handle on. What happens?
  5. Your grown-up turns the valve back on.
  6. Turn the handle on again. Watch the water come back.
For a grown-up
The supply valves are under the sink, one per pipe.
Turn the cold one off, then back on, while the child watches.
If a valve is stuck, skip that step. Just look.
