Surveys, interviews, direct observation and user testing are ways to find out what people need. A census counts everyone; a sample asks some, and in a random sample each person who answers stands for many others. Open-box answers come back spelled and shortened in different ways, so the data may not be uniform. Bias often comes from the type or source of the data, and collecting more data does not remove it. Collaboration that includes diverse perspectives helps avoid bias.
