Crew Quest: Graduation

The whole fleet gathers on the observation deck. The star cluster glows through every window, fully mapped.

Rocket and Raven stand side by side. Nova projects the tracker's report in the air: every test, PASS.

"What do you notice about how far we came?" Raven asks.

Rocket laughs. "In week 1 I counted spots from 1. Now we search, sort, recurse and ship."

Nova spins a ring of light around them. "No hint today. You figured it out. Welcome, Crew Engineers!"

  1. Functions call functions, and the call stack keeps track of who returns to whom.
  2. Recursion solves a smaller copy of a problem. It needs a base case and a smaller step.
  3. Linear search checks one by one. Binary search halves a sorted list.
  4. Selection sort and merge sort put lists in order. Merge sort does far less work on long lists.
  5. Trees hold nested data, and recursion visits every node.
  6. Big programs are built from small, tested parts.
β—‡ SHOW AND EXPLAIN
Show a grown-up the tracker's output from Friday, or your own capstone plan.
Explain what one helper does, line by line.
Explain one choice you made, like a dictionary instead of a list.
Point to a test and say what it checks.
Ask your grown-up to use the rubric from week 11 to talk it over with you.
For a grown-up
Your child has finished Code Crew Grade 5 as a Crew Engineer. Celebrate the effort and the debugging, not only the final program.
FINAL RECAP QUESTION
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
You need to find a name fast in a sorted list of 10,000 names. Which algorithm fits best?
Bonus recap statementTrue or false?
The tracker was built one tested part at a time.?
Binary search works on any jumbled list.?
count_crew uses recursion on the command tree.?
Tests are written with expected answers worked out by hand.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEThese ideas came from every week of the year.
What did the Items line show on Friday?
How many crew are in the fleet?
What spot was maps at in the report?

Congratulations, Crew Engineer! You learned to think like a programmer: plan, build, test and never stop learning.
