Friday: Evidence, Explanation and Review

Rocket is at the Windowsill before breakfast, staring at the jar that used to live in the cupboard.

"Green," he whispers. "The new leaves at the top are turning green. Two days in the light."

Raven checks the ruler. "What do you notice about the old pale parts of the stem?"

"Still pale. Still floppy. Only the new growth changed." Rocket frowns. "So the environment changed the trait, but not the past."

Nova hovers over the jar. "You have a claim and you have evidence," she says. "Can you put them together?"

"The same seeds grew differently because the light was different," Rocket says. "And when the light changed, the growth changed."

Building a scientific explanation

A scientific explanation has three parts. A claim says what you think is true. Evidence is the data you collected. Reasoning connects them.

Claim: light is an environmental factor that changes how bean sprouts grow.

Evidence: your table. The dark jar's sprouts were taller and pale. The light jar's sprouts were greener and sturdier. The dry jars did not sprout.

Reasoning: the seeds were the same kind, so the genetic factor was the same. Only the environment differed, so the environment caused the difference.

Claim: light changes how the same seeds grow
Evidence: heights, colors and leaf counts from the jars
Reasoning: same seeds, different light, different growth
Explanation: an environmental factor shaped the trait
CLAIM, EVIDENCE OR REASONING?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
"The dark jar's tallest sprout was 14 centimeters and yellow." Which part of an explanation is that?
"Light is an environmental factor that changes growth." Which part is that?
"The seeds were the same, so only the environment could cause the difference." Which part is that?

Both factors, everywhere

Scientists list more examples of evidence. Drought decreases plant growth. Fertilizer increases it. Fish grow larger in large ponds than in small ponds.

Those are environmental: water, food and space. Genetic examples include large breeds of cattle and different species of grass.

The same two factors shape people. A trait like height is set by both the instructions you inherit and the conditions you grow in.

Next week you turn to the other half of life: how plants and animals make more of themselves.

Week reviewTrue or false?
Environmental factors include light, water, space and food.?
Genetic factors are inherited from parents.?
A seedling in the dark can keep making food by photosynthesis.?
Seeds germinate without water if they get light.?
A trait can be shaped by both genes and environment.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEThese five ideas are the explanation the standard asks for.
OUR WEEK, IN ORDER
  • ?We built a claim, evidence and reasoning explanation.
  • ?We measured every sprout in the light and dark jars.
  • ?We read a table of plant responses to light, day length and moisture.
  • ?We noticed one jar was pale and named two kinds of factors.
  • ?We learned how seedlings bend toward light.
WHY THIS EXERCISEThe week moved from one pale jar to a full scientific explanation.
Fish grow larger in large ponds than in small ponds. Which environmental factor is that? Type one word.
WHY THIS EXERCISEMatching an example to a factor shows you can use the idea beyond your jars.
Try it
Measure the moved jar's tallest sprout again today. Compare it with Wednesday's number.
Look closely at the newest leaves with the hand lens. Record their color.
Safety first
Sprouts and jar water are lab materials. Nothing is tasted.
Wash your hands after handling the sprouts.
Draw the moved jar today. Color the old stem pale and the new growth green, as you see it.

Strong explaining, scientist. Tomorrow is Nature Day: a family look at how the same kind of plant grows in different spots.
