Wednesday: The breathing muscle

Rocket lies down with a toy on his belly.

The toy goes up and down!

Raven asks, "What do you notice?"

Nova says, "A muscle is helping."

Meet the diaphragm

Under your lungs is a dome-shaped muscle.

It is called the diaphragm.

It is the main muscle for breathing.

When you breathe in, it moves down.

Your chest gets bigger, and air rushes in.

When you breathe out, it relaxes.

Your lungs get smaller, like a balloon letting air out.

You need

  • A soft rug or mat
  • A small soft toy
  • A strip of tissue paper
Safety first
Use a soft, light toy.
Keep the tissue paper out of your mouth and nose.
Breathe gently and slowly.

Steps

  1. Lie on your back on the rug.
  2. Set the soft toy on your belly.
  3. Breathe in slowly. Watch the toy.
  4. Breathe out slowly. Watch the toy.
  5. Sit up and hold the tissue strip near your mouth.
  6. Breathe out gently. Watch the strip.
