Body Lab Day: Heartbeat check

Rocket, Raven and Nova plan a heartbeat check.

"Rest, jump, rest," says Raven.

Nova says, "Watch for a pattern!"

  1. Your heart is a muscle about fist size.
  2. It pumps blood all day and all night.
  3. Blood carries oxygen and food to every part.
  4. Valves shutting make the lub-dub sound.
  5. Your heart beats faster after you move.
◇ FAMILY HEARTBEAT CHECK
Everyone sits still and finds a pulse.
Notice how fast the beat feels.
Now everyone jumps or marches in place for a bit.
Find your pulse again. Is it faster or slower?
Sit and rest together.
Check your pulse one more time.
Each person checks only their own pulse.
Safety first
Clear a space so nobody trips.
Jump on a soft, flat floor.
Stop and rest if you feel too tired.
For a grown-up
This is about noticing a pattern, not numbers.
Do not compare people.
If you have health questions, ask a doctor or nurse.
PATTERN CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
After jumping, the beat feels...
After resting, the beat feels...
What does blood carry?
Draw a fast heartbeat and a slow heartbeat.

Your heart is a super pump!

You are a super scientist!

Next week, you will meet your lungs.
