Tuesday: Bones that protect

Rocket puts on his bike helmet. "This keeps my head safe!"

Raven taps her head. "What do you notice? We have one inside!"

Nova blinks. "What is under your hair?"

Your skull

Your skull is the bones of your head.

Your skull protects your brain.

Your lower jaw is the only head bone that moves.

It opens and closes so you can talk and chew.

A helmet helps protect your skull when you ride.

Your ribs

Your ribs are like a cage around your chest.

They keep your heart and lungs safe.

Your ribs come in pairs, one on each side.

Your spine

Your spine runs down the middle of your back.

It is made of 33 small bones, stacked up.

Each one is shaped like a ring.

Your spine holds you up straight.

It lets you bend and twist.
