Wednesday: Touch detectives

Rocket grabs things from the junk drawer. "Feel these!"

Raven rubs a sponge. "What do you notice?"

Nova says, "Close your eyes. Let your fingers tell you."

How touch works

The hidden dermis has tiny nerve endings.

Nerve endings feel what you touch.

They send a message to your brain.

Your brain says, "This is soft!" or "This is rough!"

Touch can tell you soft, rough, smooth and bumpy.

You need

  • A cotton ball
  • A metal spoon
  • A dry sponge
  • A leaf
  • A piece of foil
Safety first
A grown-up checks that every object is safe to touch.
Nothing sharp. Nothing hot.
Touch with your fingers only. Nothing goes in your mouth.

Steps

  1. Close your eyes.
  2. A grown-up puts one object in your hand.
  3. Feel it with your fingers.
  4. Say one word for how it feels.
  5. Open your eyes and check.
  6. Try the next object.
