Body Lab Day: Dark box

Rocket hides a toy inside a closed box.

He peeks through a tiny hole. "I see nothing!"

Raven asks, "What would help?"

Nova says, "Let some light in."

  1. Eyes need light to see.
  2. Light goes in through the pupil.
  3. Pupils get bigger in dim light.
  4. Eyelids, lashes and tears protect eyes.
  5. Never look right at the Sun.
◇ MAKE A DARK BOX
Find a shoebox with a lid.
A grown-up cuts a peephole in one end.
A grown-up cuts a flap in the lid.
Put a small toy inside. Close the lid and flap.
Peek in the hole. What can you see?
Now open the flap a little. Peek again.
Last, shine a flashlight in the flap.
Safety first
A grown-up does all the cutting.
Shine the flashlight into the box, not at eyes.
For a grown-up
Ask: what did you notice with the flap shut?
Ask: what changed when light came in?
Praise careful looking.
DARK BOX CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
The flap is shut. Can you see the toy?
What helped you see the toy?
Who does the cutting?
Draw your toy inside the dark box.

You proved that eyes need light!

Next week, you will explore ears and hearing.
