Body Lab Day: Body Systems Map

Rocket unrolls a long sheet of paper across the floor. "Let's map the whole body!"

Raven hands out crayons. "What do you notice when every system is on one page?"

Nova hovers above the paper. "Give each system its own color," she says. "Then look for places they meet."

The whole family kneels down to draw.

  1. A cell is the smallest building block of living things.
  2. Similar cells team up to make tissues.
  3. Different tissues make an organ that does a special job.
  4. Organs work together in systems, and systems help each other.
◇ BUILD A BODY SYSTEMS MAP
Draw a simple person shape on a big sheet of paper.
Pick one color for each system: bones, muscles, nerves, blood, breathing and food.
Draw a brain and lines for nerves in one color.
Draw a heart and blood vessels in another color.
Add lungs, a stomach and some bones in their own colors.
Make a color key in the corner.
Find two places where systems meet. Circle them.
Safety first
Use crayons or markers only. Nothing goes in your mouth.
A grown-up does any cutting with sharp scissors.
Clear a safe space on the floor before you kneel.
For a grown-up
Sketch a simple outline. You do not need to trace anyone.
Ask: which system would you add next? Why?
MAP CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which pair belongs to the same system?
Which level is the biggest team?
The smallest building block of life is a ____.
The organ that pumps blood is the ____.

Amazing map makers! Next week we explore the skeleton, the frame that holds the body up.
