Monday: How We See

Rocket switches off the shop light. "Where did my bike go?" he asks.

He can barely see it in the dark corner.

Raven clicks on a flashlight and points it at the bike. "What do you notice now?"

The bike pops into view. Nova hovers beside the beam. "Follow the light," she says. "Where does it go after the bike?"

Light bounces into your eyes

A light source makes its own light. The Sun, a lamp and a flashlight are light sources.

Most things do not make their own light.

We see most things because light from a source reflects off them.

Some of that bounced light enters our eyes.

The eyes send signals to the brain. The brain makes a picture.

Put a toy or a cup across the room.
A grown-up switches on a lamp. What changes?
Safety first
Keep enough light to walk safely. Clear the floor first.
Never look straight at the Sun or into a bright light.
No bike needed for this test.
In your Bike Shop Notebook, draw a flashlight, a bike and an eye. Add arrows for the light path.

Bright thinking! Tomorrow we find out why some surfaces shine and others do not.
