Wednesday: Wheels From the Middle Out

Rocket draws a wheel. He makes a circle and adds a dot in the middle. "Done!"

Raven holds up a picture of a real wheel. "What do you notice between the middle and the edge?"

Rocket squints. "Lots of thin lines!"

Nova hovers beside the picture. "Start at the center and travel out," she says. "Name each part you pass."

Parts of a wheel

The hub is the center of the wheel. The axle goes through it.

Spokes are thin rods. They connect the hub to the rim.

Spokes carry the weight of the rider and the bike.

The rim is the outer edge of the wheel. It holds the tire.

The tire wraps around the rim. It grips the ground as the wheel rolls.
