Bike Shop Day: Family Parts Tour

Rocket lines up his family in the garage. "Welcome to the Bike Shop parts tour!"

Raven holds the shop notebook. "What do you notice first?" she asks the group.

Nova hovers above the bike. "A good guide points and names," she says. "Can you find ten parts?"

Rocket takes a deep breath and points to the frame.

  1. A bike is a system: a group of parts that work together.
  2. The frame holds all the parts together.
  3. The handlebars and fork steer the front wheel.
  4. The pedals, crank, gears and chain turn the back wheel.
  5. The brakes slow the bike. The tires grip the ground.
  6. Engineers name the problem, criteria and constraints first.
◇ FAMILY PARTS TOUR
A grown-up holds a bike still. It can be a family member's bike, with their OK.
You are the tour guide. Point to a part and say its name.
Tell your family the job of each part.
Try for ten parts: frame, wheels, tires, handlebars, saddle, pedals, crank, chain, gears and brakes.
Make a check in your shop notebook for each part you name.
No bike? Give the tour with your notebook drawing or a picture.
Safety first
The bike stays still the whole time. A grown-up holds it.
Point with a finger. Keep hands away from the chain, gears and spokes.
Nobody turns the pedals or spins the wheels during the tour.
Wash your hands if you touch the chain.
For a grown-up
Ask your child which part they think is most important, and why.
There is no wrong answer. Every part has a job in the system.
