Explorer Day: Two-spot count

Rocket sets a timer. "Two minutes each spot!"

Raven holds two tally sheets.

She asks, "What do you notice first?"

Nova says, "Look low and look high."

  1. A sunny spot is warm. A shady spot is cool.
  2. Different spots have different living things.
  3. A tally is one mark for each thing.
  4. Five marks make a bundle.
  5. Compare with more and fewer.
  6. No spot wins. They are just different.
◇ DO A TWO-SPOT COUNT
With a grown-up, pick a sunny and a shady spot.
Make two tally sheets in your notebook.
Sit in the sunny spot for two minutes.
Tally every plant kind and animal you see.
Move to the shady spot. Do it again.
Count the marks on each sheet.
Tell your grown-up which had more and fewer.
Safety first
Stay with your grown-up the whole time.
Look with your eyes. Never touch a wild animal or insect.
Do not touch nests, mushrooms or unknown plants.
Some insects sting. Some plants itch.
Wash your hands when you come in.
For a grown-up
Help with the timer and the tally marks.

Ask: what does this spot have that the other lacks?
Write the date on both sheets.
