Explorer Day: Season-signs walk

Rocket grabs the field notebook.

"Let us find ten signs today!" he says.

Raven asks, "What do you notice first?"

Nova says, "Start with the trees."

  1. A year has four seasons in order.
  2. Daylight is long in summer and short in winter.
  3. Plants sprout, flower, make seeds and rest.
  4. Some animals migrate or sleep in winter.
  5. The field guide months tell a season story.
  6. Season signs are clues outside.
◇ TAKE A SEASON-SIGNS WALK
Walk around your yard or block with a grown-up.
Look at trees. Leaves, needles or bare?
Look at the ground. Buds, flowers, seeds or leaves?
Feel the air. Warm or cool?
Listen. Do you hear birds or bugs?
Count the signs you find.
A grown-up writes them in your notebook.
Safety first
Stay with your grown-up the whole walk.
Look with your eyes. Never touch a wild animal.
Do not touch nests, eggs, mushrooms or unknown plants.
Some insects sting. Some plants itch.
Wash your hands when you get home.
For a grown-up
Ask: what season do the signs show?
Ask: what will this tree look like next season?
Write the date next to the list.
Praise every sign, big or small.
