Explorer Day: Home hunt

Raven packs her notebook and a pencil.

"Home hunt day!" cheers Rocket.

Nova floats ahead. "Eyes open, hands down."

  1. A home keeps an animal safe and dry.
  2. Birds build nests for eggs.
  3. Rabbits and chipmunks dig burrows.
  4. Spiders spin webs from silk.
  5. Bees share a hive.
  6. A home fits what the animal needs.
  7. Explorers never disturb a home.
◇ EXPLORER DAY HOME HUNT
Walk the yard, sidewalk or park with your grown-up.
Look up for nests and tree holes.
Look down for holes in the ground.
Look in corners and bushes for webs.
Count each home you see.
Stand back. Point. Do not touch.
Your grown-up writes the count in your notebook.
Safety first
Look with your eyes only.
Never touch a nest, web, hole, egg or hive.
Stay with your grown-up the whole time.
Wash your hands when you get home.
For a grown-up
Ask: who do you think lives there?
Ask: what does this animal need?
Praise every home spotted, even a tiny one.
Keep a safe distance from any animal.
