Explorer Day: Pond or puddle look

Raven leads the way down the creek path.

Rocket carries the notebook this time.

"Who lives by the water?" he asks.

Nova says, "Look at the edges first."

  1. Reptiles have dry scales and like warm sun.
  2. Amphibians have smooth wet skin.
  3. Amphibians start life in water.
  4. A tadpole grows into a frog.
  5. Look under logs only with a grown-up.
  6. Never touch a wild reptile or amphibian.

Walk with your grown-up to a pond or puddle.
Stand back from the edge.
Look at the water edge for frogs or turtles.
Look at sunny rocks and logs for reptiles.
Listen for peeps or croaks.
Check your field guides from Wednesday and Thursday.
Draw what you saw or heard in your notebook.
Safety first
Stay with your grown-up the whole time.
Stay back from the water edge. Hold a hand.
Never touch a reptile, amphibian or eggs.
Only a grown-up lifts a log or rock.
Wash your hands when you get home.

No pond nearby? A puddle or wet garden works.
Ask: is this animal scaly or slippery?
Ask: why does it like this spot?
Hold hands near any water.
Write the date in the notebook.
