Explorer Day: Bug hunt

Rocket brings a big magnifier.

"Everything looks huge!" he says.

Raven kneels by a flower bed.

Nova hums, "Eyes only. Hands behind your back."

  1. Insects have six legs and three body parts.
  2. Spiders have eight legs. They are not insects.
  3. Bugs hide under leaves, on flowers and under rocks.
  4. Bees visit flowers. Ants carry food.
  5. A tally counts bugs, one line each.
  6. Look with your eyes. Never touch.
◇ EXPLORER DAY BUG HUNT
Bring a magnifier if you have one.
Walk slowly with your grown-up.
Check under leaves and on flowers.
Ask your grown-up to lift one rock.
Look at each bug through the magnifier.
Count its legs. Insect or spider?
Draw your favorite bug in your notebook.
Safety first
Stay next to your grown-up.
Look with your eyes. Never touch a bug.
Bees and wasps sting. Stay back.
Only a grown-up lifts a rock.
Some plants itch. Do not grab leaves.
Wash your hands when you go in.
For a grown-up
Any magnifier works. A phone camera zoom works too.
Ask: how many legs do you count?
Ask: where was it hiding?
Put every rock and leaf back where it was.
Write the date and place on the notebook page.
