Explorer Day: The ten-minute sit spot

Rocket and Raven sit on the grass.

Nobody talks. A breeze moves the leaves.

A bird hops close.

Nova whispers, "See what stillness finds."

  1. An explorer looks, listens and smells.
  2. Explorers never taste things outside.
  3. A living thing grows, eats, drinks and moves.
  4. A rock or a bench is not alive.
  5. Living things need food or water, air and a home.
  6. A nature notebook holds what you notice.
◇ EXPLORER DAY SIT SPOT
Go to your sit spot with your grown-up.
Bring your notebook and a pencil.
Sit still and quiet for ten minutes.
Your grown-up can keep the time.
Notice what comes close.
Whisper one thing you see every minute.
Draw your favorite thing when time is up.
Safety first
Stay next to your grown-up.
Look with your eyes. Never touch a wild animal.
Leave nests, eggs, mushrooms and unknown plants alone.
Some bugs sting and some plants itch.
Wash your hands when you go in.
For a grown-up
Ten minutes is long for small explorers.
Five minutes is a fine start.
Ask: what did you hear first?
Ask: what living thing came closest?
Write the date and place on the notebook page.
