Wednesday: Explorer Lab: Spot the Subtle Edit

Raven lays two snapshot cards side by side. Each one is a 5 by 5 grid of brightness numbers.

"One number is different," she says. "Find it."

Rocket squints at the grids. "They look exactly the same. This is going to take forever."

Nova dims her lights so the numbers are easy to read. "Remember, a picture is pixels," she says.

"And each pixel is just a number. Change one number and you change the picture, even if nobody notices."

Rocket picks up a pencil and starts checking, square by square.

What you need

  • Graph paper or two index cards
  • A pencil and an eraser
  • A partner, if you can find one
  • A clock or timer to time your search (optional)
Safety first
This lab uses only paper and pencils.
You will not use any app, website or AI tool. Everything is on paper.

Part 1: Find the edit

Remember from Week 3: pixel values go from 0 (black) to 255 (white).

Here are the brightness values for the center of two snapshot cards.

Card AABCDE
Row 12035403520
Row 235901509035
Row 34015025015040
Row 435901509035
Row 52035403520
Card BABCDE
Row 12035403520
Row 235901509035
Row 34015025015040
Row 435901508035
Row 52035403520
Which cell is different in Card B? Type the column letter and row number, like A1.
WHY THIS EXERCISECell D4 changed from 90 to 80. One number out of 25 is a very subtle edit.
How many numbers are in one 5 by 5 grid?
By how much did the edited value change? 90 minus 80 is ____.

Part 2: Make your own

  1. On graph paper, copy Card A twice. Label them Card 1 and Card 2.
  2. Ask your partner to look away. Change one number on Card 2 by 10 or less.
  3. Swap roles if you can. Your partner hides an edit for you.
  4. Time how long it takes to find the edit. Write the time down.
  5. Try once more with a change of only 5. Is it harder?

Part 3: When the edit changes the label

Here is one Sky Sorter feature row, before and after someone edited the snapshot.

Edited snapshot2102no
WHAT WOULD SKY SORTER SAY?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A bright, small object with a streak. Which label fits best?
After the edit, the streak is gone. Which label would Sky Sorter likely give now?
Lab ideaTrue or false?
Changing one pixel value changes the picture.?
A change you cannot see by eye cannot change a computer's decision.?
Erasing one feature can change Sky Sorter's label.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEComputers read the numbers, so a tiny edit can flip a decision even if people miss it.

Excellent detective work. Tomorrow you build a slow-down checklist for anything that seems too wild to be true.
