Wednesday: Explorer Lab: Design a Fair Helper

Rocket sketches a giant helper with ten arms. "It does everything!" he says.

Raven smiles. "What do you notice? We never said what job it does."

Nova circles the sketch. "Start with one job," she says. "Then check every quality."

Your lab

You will design an AI helper on paper. It will not be real. It is a plan.

  • Two sheets of paper
  • Pencils and crayons
  • The quality table from Monday
  • A partner or a grown-up, if you can
Safety first
Use only paper, pencils and crayons.
Keep pencil points down at the table.
Do not write any real personal information on your design.
  1. Choose one job for your helper, like sorting mission photos or sorting recycling.
  2. Give your helper a name and draw it.
  3. List three kinds of examples it needs to learn from. Include many kinds.
  4. Write how you will test it with cards it has never seen.
  5. Write one privacy rule your helper follows.
  6. Write one rule that shows how it makes choices.
  7. Fill in the checklist table.

Here is a sample plan from the crew. Use it for the checks below.

Crew plan: the Photo Sorter Helper

Training examplesBright and dark photos of all three labels
Test planKeep 10 photos hidden for testing
Privacy ruleIt never asks for names, addresses or passwords
Choice ruleIf it has leaves, it is a plant
Crew planDoes it show this quality?
Bright and dark photos of all labels: fair?
Hidden test photos: reliable?
Never asks for passwords: private?
A rule people can read: understandable?
It only works on bright photos: fair?
WHY THIS EXERCISEEach part of the crew plan supports a quality of trustworthy AI.
CHECK YOUR DESIGN
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Rocket's helper learned only from his own drawings. What is the problem?
How should you test your helper?
How many qualities are on the checklist? Type a number.
WHY THIS EXERCISEReliable, safe, secure, fair, private and understandable make 6.
On paper, draw your fair helper doing its one job. Label its name.

Amazing designs! Tomorrow we test your helper with pretend users.
