Friday: The Big Review

The crew hangs every drawing from the course on the station wall.

Rocket races along the wall. "Pixels! Sensors! Hidden test cards!"

Raven walks slowly behind him. "What do you notice about all of it together?"

Nova glows brightly. "Tell the story of AI," she says, "from the very first week."

The big ideas

  • AI is a computer system people build. It makes guesses, suggestions or choices.
  • Computers sense the world with sensors. Perception means getting meaning from them.
  • Pictures are made of pixels with red, green and blue values from 0 to 255.
  • Models describe things by features. A model is not the real thing.
  • Machine learning finds patterns in lots of labeled training data.
  • We test models on new examples and fix what goes wrong.
  • One-sided data can make AI unfair. We fill the gaps.
  • Talking AI learned word patterns. It is a tool, not a person.
  • AI can be wrong and sound sure. We check trusted sources.
  • Private information stays private. Ask a grown-up first.
  • Good AI is reliable, safe, secure, fair, private and understandable.
