Explorer Quest: Family Privacy Plan

Rocket and Raven tape a big sheet of paper to the wall.

"Let's write the crew's privacy rules," Raven says. "What do you notice we should include?"

"Passwords stay secret!" Rocket says. "And no typing addresses!"

Nova hovers near the marker. "Make the rules easy to remember," she says.

  1. Personal information, like a home address, password or school name, stays private.
  2. Passwords protect devices and information. Keep them secret, even from friends.
  3. Never type private things into any app, game or chatbot.
  4. Stop, do not type, tell a grown-up.
  5. Good AI should protect privacy, and you are the first guard.
◇ MAKE A FAMILY PRIVACY PLAN
Get a big sheet of paper and markers.
Write a title: Our Privacy Plan.
Together, write three to five rules in your own words.
Include: ask a grown-up before typing into any app.
Draw a small picture next to each rule.
Hang the plan near where your family uses screens.
For a grown-up
Keep the plan general. Do not write real addresses, passwords or school names on it.
Ask: what would you do if a game asked where you live?
Tell your child they can always come to you, even after a mistake.
