Wednesday: Explorer Lab: Fact Check Station

Rocket deals out eight cards from the pretend helper. Each one sounds very sure.

"These all look right to me," Rocket says.

Raven lines up a calendar, a pencil and some buttons. "What do you notice? We have tools to check."

Nova hovers over the cards. "Check each card before you believe it," she says.

Your lab

You will fact-check eight sure-sounding cards with trusted tools.

  • Eight index cards or paper strips
  • A pencil
  • A calendar
  • Twenty small counters, like buttons or paper squares
  • A partner or a grown-up, if you can
Safety first
Keep small counters away from little brothers and sisters.
Nothing goes in your mouth.
Pencil points stay down at the table.
  1. Copy one helper card from the table onto each index card.
  2. Read a card out loud in a very sure voice.
  3. Pick a trusted way to check it: calendar, counting or drawing.
  4. Check it. Write true or false in the table.
  5. Do all eight cards. Count how many the helper got wrong.
