Explorer Quest: The Fair Data Hunt

Rocket fans out a stack of picture books. "Let's train a pretend model to know animals!"

Raven flips through the pages. "What do you notice? Most of these animals are dogs and cats."

Nova blinks. "Count every kind first," she says. "Then you will spot the gap."

  1. One-sided training data leaves gaps.
  2. Gaps can make a model work worse for some things or some people.
  3. Models need many examples of every kind, not just one.
  4. People choose the data, so people can find gaps and fill them.
  5. Fair design thinks about everyone who will use a tool.
◇ THE FAIR DATA HUNT
Pick a pile of pictures together: books, cards or drawings.
Choose one thing to count, like kinds of animals or kinds of places.
Make a tally for each kind you find.
Circle the kind with the fewest tallies. That is the gap.
Talk about it: what would a pretend model trained on this pile get wrong?
Draw three new pictures to help fill the gap.
KindTallyTotal
For a grown-up
Ask: which kind was the gap? How could we fill it?
Ask: when has a game or rule not fit someone?
Help your child see that noticing who is left out is a strength.
