Rocket hides one photo behind his back. "Guess its label!" he says.
"That is impossible," Raven laughs. "Give me clues! What do you notice about it?"
"It is mostly green," Rocket says. "And it has a stem with leaves."
Nova hovers between them. "Those clues have a name," she hints. "They describe the photo."
Raven grins. She knows the answer now.
A feature is a clue that describes something.
Color, shape and size are features.
Features help us tell things apart.
The sorting model will use features to sort the mission photos.
| Photo label | Main color | Shape clue |
|---|---|---|
| plant | mostly green | a stem and leaves |
| rock | gray or brown | lumpy, no handle, no leaves |
| tool | shiny gray metal | a handle |
These features describe the photos in our story pile.
| Is it a feature? | True or false? |
|---|---|
| mostly green | ? |
| has a handle | ? |
| lumpy shape | ? |
| Rocket likes this photo | ? |
Some features are more useful than others.
Rocks and tools can both be gray. So color alone cannot tell them apart.
The shape clue can. Does it have a handle?
Great clue finding, explorer! Tomorrow we turn features into yes or no questions.
