Explorer Quest: Sense Walk

Rocket and Raven tiptoe down the station hallway with a clipboard.

"Let's collect signals," Raven whispers. "What do you notice with your eyes and ears?"

Rocket writes fast. "Humming, beeping, a blinking light!"

Nova floats behind them. "Signals first," she hints. "Then meaning. What made each one?"

  1. Computers sense the world with sensors, like cameras and microphones.
  2. What a sensor picks up is a signal.
  3. Perception means getting meaning from signals.
  4. Hardware (like a camera) and software (programs) work as a team.
  5. Fuzzy signals can lead to wrong guesses.
◇ SENSE WALK
Walk around your home with a family member.
Make two lists: things you see and things you hear.
Stop in three spots. Each person closes their eyes and listens for 30 seconds.
Write each sound. Then guess what made it.
Play Sound Detective: one person makes a quiet sound behind a book. The other guesses.
Take turns. Who found the most meaning from the signals?
For a grown-up
Ask: what is the difference between a signal and its meaning?
Ask: when was a sound hard to name? Why?
Keep the sound game gentle and quiet. No loud noises near ears.
