An AI system is an engineered or machine-based system that, for a set of objectives, produces outputs such as predictions, recommendations or decisions that affect real or virtual places, with different levels of autonomy. Generative AI makes new synthetic content, such as text and images. Computers perceive the world with sensors, and large language models help some AI talk in natural language. AI does not think the way a person does. AI brings risks ordinary software does not, such as data that does not match its setting, data that goes stale, and systems too big and complex to see into. AI systems are socio-technical, so how they are used matters as much as how they are built.
